Module 12: Classification of current
There are two main classifications are there based on their direction of current flow
1.Direct Current
2. Alternative current
1.Direct Current: The current that flows in one direction is called direct current (D.C).Unlike an AC current, it does not flow in one direction. Note that direct current means that it has a constant magnitude, as shown in the figure below, and the current flows in one direction along ABCD, as shown in the figure.
2.Alternative Current: In an alternative current, the direction of charge flow reverses periodically, and it has a certain frequency depending on country standards (e.g., Indian has 50 Hz).. The shape of the waveform can also be a factor. The most common waveform is sinusoidal; other waveforms are also used for different applications (e.g., square wave, sawtooth wave, etc.), as shown in the figure.
